Martial Fitness

Let's dissect “martial fitness” so the totality of what you will develop becomes clearer.

For us, the “martial” part of the term refers to your preparedness to defend yourself, while the “fitness” part of the term refers to the improvements you will gain in your physical, mental, and spiritual attributes.

Collectively, "martial fitness" refers to an improved state of preparedness to defend one’s self that results from improvements in physical, mental, and spiritual attributes.

In short, your training will give you what you want, which is an improved state of readiness to defend yourself.

Motivation

What is your motivation for seeking out martial arts training?

Are you seeking to fend off the Grim Reaper?

Learning martial arts, like learning to swim, is a potentially life-saving endeavor.

Martial arts can certainly prepare you to defend yourself against the Grim Reaper – someone trying to physically harm you or worse.  

While the actual attack of the Grim Reaper may be your surface-level motivation, it’s likely that what lies beneath the surface - self-doubt and uncertainty - is an equally important motivator.

While the actual attack of the Grim Reaper is certainly dangerous, the internal trepidation he causes is equally dangerous as it undermines your life on a consistent basis via negative self-talk and procrastination.

Your martial arts training here will resolve both problems.

Deficits in your self-defense skills will be lessened in the short-term and greatly diminished in the long-run.

Our beginners’ curriculum incorporates three of the four systems. I didn't understand, at first, how one would train and keep up with multiple systems. As I continued my training, I came to realize the connections between the systems and I'm so amazed by how I can connect the dots even at such an early stage of my training.

Guro Ron is a very skillful and talented teacher. He has an eye for detail. If I slack in execution, he picks it up quicker than I could realize it myself. Even more importantly, he encourages us to never sacrifice form.  

I know the fundamentals I'm learning at the beginners’ level are what will make me a great martial artist. Good body mechanics eliminates unnecessary movements, makes techniques easier to apply, and, of course, produces more esthetic movements.

I know I'm at the right place with the right people around me and I would like to welcome others who may be interested in any of the mentioned arts but may be reluctant to take the first step."

Experience

Teaching experience, which dates back to 2001, has been earned both publicly and privately. 

Public experience has included stints aboard a Marine Corps base and an Air Force installation, as well as locations in Williamsport, Maryland and Falling Waters, West Virginia.

I served as the Exercise & Training Program Manager for a Marine Corps Base from April 1996 through February 2008. I ran the Marine Corps Community Services Martial Arts Program from 2001 through 2008.

I served as the Exercise Physiologist for an Air Force Base from September 2014 through November 2015. I ran a base Martial Arts Program for approximately eight months.

Private experience has included one-on-one student training in northern Virginia and Falling Waters, West Virginia.


Affiliation

HIMA is an affiliate of the world-renowned Magda Institute Association, which is headed by the internationally respected Guro / Sifu Cass Magda.

Our patented Phase Program is provided by the MI Association.

Half of our Cultural Program is provided by the MI Association.

In addition to curriculum, we are also afforded permission to use the logos of the MI Association. The Association logo is pictured above. With the exception of the HIMA and Wing Chun logos, which are our own, all remaining logos are the property of the Association.

The Warrior's Path

If you haven’t claimed your three free classes yet, you must still be hesitating.

One part of your hesitation is likely due to uncertainty about the path you need to walk to solve your problems and reach your goals.

If so, know that the path you need to walk is very clearly defined.

We call that path “The Warrior’s Path.”

The “Path” involves five simple steps:

  1. Schedule and complete your first free class.

  2. Schedule and complete your remaining two free classes.

  3. Join our brotherhood by becoming a member.

  4. Commit to being a good student by attending class regularly, taking notes, training with diligence, and not quitting.

  5. Achieve your status of competent, confident warrior by letting us guide you on your journey of martial growth.


Shared Values Pledge

The other part of your hesitation is likely due to lingering uncertainty about us - specifically about what’s important to us.

If so, know that what’s important to us is also very clearly defined.

Our “Shared Values Pledge” defines what’s important to us.

The “Pledge” includes five values that are important to us and that should also be important to our students:

From "Average Joe" to "All-Pro"

Still not ready to claim the first of your three free classes?

You must be wondering about the significance of martial arts in your life.

To begin to understand the significance of training here we want you to visualize a before and after image.

Before your training here, you’re an "Average Joe." You have few, if any, self-defense skills. Your self-doubt is obvious to you, and perhaps others as well. This self-doubt impacts your overall, day-to-day life, which leads you to have a mediocre outlook on your future.

After your training here, you’re an "All-Pro." You have solid self-defense skills. Your confidence is obvious to others. This confidence transcends martial arts and positively impacts your day-to-day life. You envision a bright future in which you’re capable of anything you commit yourself to.


Status, Connection & Self-Actualization

To further grasp the true significance of training here you should consider other highly meaningful aspects of your training, such as:

  • Connection

  • Self-actualization

Everyone likes to be recognized for accomplishments. As you demonstrate proficiency with the material of a specific level, you will earn promotion to the next level. As you move up the levels, your status progresses from junior trainee to senior leader.

Your training will also connect you on two levels – personal and social. On a personal level, the art will become you and you will become the art. One Silat expression states, “You do not choose Silat, it chooses you.” On a social level, you will become a part of something larger than yourself. You will be become a part of a band of brothers and sisters that share a common love.
