Are you curious about the martial arts background of Ron Hebb?
Ron Hebb is a Washington County, MD native by birth. He was born at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, MD and raised in Williamsport, Maryland.
Ron has been a lifelong lover of martial arts.
As of 2008, Ron has more than 20 years training experience and more than seven years teaching experience.
The Martial Seeds Are Planted
Ron's unofficial martial arts journey began as a youngster watching Kung Fu Theater on Sundays. He was fascinated by what he saw. It was this Kung Fu viewing that exposed him to Bruce Lee.
He not only watched Bruce Lee, but he also read about him. Ron knew that Bruce’s original art was Wing Chun Gung Fu and that he later created Jeet Kune Do. Furthermore, he dreamed of studying both!
Ron’s school days consisted primarily of academic studies and athletics, which did not leave time for martial arts. Despite being an athlete all throughout his K-12 education, his passion for martial arts never waned.
The Journey Begins – The Hershberger Era
Ron Hebb’s martial arts journey technically began during his undergraduate days when he started training in an eclectic style of “Korean Karate” under the guidance of Greg Hershberger, a student of former Hagerstown, MD Police Chief Paul Wood.
He trained privately with Greg Hershberger for a little more than three years.
While he learned much, the three lessons that had lasting impressions on him involved earning rank, enduring contact in training, and working hard on the fundamentals, which serve as the foundation that supports the development of future skills.
The Journey Involves a Journey – The Terlaje Time
The next stage of Ron Hebb's journey involved a very brief stint of Chinese Kempo training on the island of Guam under the supervision of Ralph Terlaje.
While he only trained for approximately two months due to the nature of his work assignment, he learned much.
He learned to empty his cup and start fresh. He also learned a great deal about environmental awareness in self-defense. Lastly, he experienced the exceptional organization of the Universal Kempo Karate Association, which taught him lessons that he will use in running his Institute.
The Journey Leads to Bruce Lee’s Beginnings – The Jackson Decade
Next up was approximately ten years of training in Wing Chun Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do concepts under Wayne Jackson.
This was a high point along Ron Hebb’s road of progress. His striking, trapping, and flowing skills improved markedly.
He established himself as one of Jackson’s most dedicated students.
In time, he began teaching the advanced class.
Many valuable lessons were gleaned from this time.
His prowess as a student really blossomed as he learned to diligently and effectively dissect videos to grasp new techniques and principles.
He learned to hold pads exceptionally well enabling him to provide outstanding training opportunities for other students to improve striking combinations.
Lastly, he learned the value of real friendships as he formed lifelong bonds with guys who shared a passion for martial arts and training.
The Journey Kicks into HIGH Gear – The Magda Magnification
The current stage of Ron Hebb’s journey began when he started training in Jeet Kune Do, Kali, and Pentjak Silat under the expert tutelage of Sifu / Guro Cass Magda.
This stage of his journey and the training he is receiving eclipse all other stages and training. This stage is the Mount Everest, Mauna Kea and Chimborazo combined!
In many ways, this stage has begun Ron’s journey again!
While the benefits are too plentiful to mention all, a few will suffice.
He continues to learn how to put philosophies and principles into action.
He has become a part of an organization and a family that produces high-quality martial artists and even higher quality human beings.
Lastly, through his connection with Guro Cass, he has been welcomed into the homes and schools of Silat masters in Malaysia and Thailand.
This latest path has sparked a new period of growth and development in Ron’s personal and professional lives.
Earning the right to be recognized as a Magda Institute Association certified professional is Ron’s biggest accomplishment to date.
The guidance, training, and support of his teacher, Sifu / Guro Cass Magda, ensure Ron’s continued professional development. Additionally, it assures his students that they are getting the same high-quality programs that are taught at the Magda Institute headquarters.
Could you benefit from the high quality guidance, training, and support of a Magda Institute certified teacher?

The Future Journey
If the future goes as planned, Ron Hebb will train in Malaysia and Thailand.
He is eager to train with Guro Jak in Malaysia. During his previous visit to Malaysia, he visited with Guro Jak and he was intrigued by his Harimau Berantai Silat system.
He is just as eager to get some Muay Thai training in Thailand. Ron’s in-laws live there; so regular trips are desirable and likely. He is hoping to check this item off his “to do list” within the next year to two.
Additionally, he’d like to visit more of Indonesia. He is hoping that he can accompany his good friend, Mike Tasman (a senior staff instructor at the Magda Institute) during one of his return visits to his homeland.
