A1. As a beginning student at our Institute, you will be enrolled in the Beginning Phase 1 program. The tuition for this program varies depending upon your enrollment status. For specifics, contact us at 240-366-8025. As a Beginning Phase 1 student, you are allowed to train three times per week — exclusively with other students 13 years of age and older and adults. Class sizes are limited and personal attention from our professional staff is high, which creates an optimal environment for your learning. The typical length of the Beginning Phase 1 program is 4-6 months. We offer a 25% student, military, and police officer discount. Contact HIMA at 240-366-8025 to learn more!

What makes HIMA unique?
Many, many things make us unique, as you will see when you join us!
Our arts make us unique! We provide training in Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Pentjak Silat, and Wing Chun Gung Fu.
Our ties make us unique! We are a member of the Magda Institution Association. The association was founded by Sifu Cass Magda,a 2nd generation, direct lineage student of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do and a world-renowned Filipino and Indonesian martial arts teacher and practitioner.
Our programs make us unique! We offer the coveted Magda Institute Association Phase Curriculum that seamlessly blends Jeet Kune Do, Kali, and Pentjak Silat. We also offer a Cultural Curriculum that provides in-depth study of Kali, Silat, and Wing Chun.
Our standards make us unique! Our standards are very high! Much is expected of you! You will be required to meet physical (fitness and martial skills) and mental standards.
You will EARN your rank!
Our philosophy makes us unique! HIMA teaches the Magda fighting philosophy – you are the director, your opponent is the directee.
Additionally, HIMA subscribes to the Pete Jacobs (a Bruce Lee student) philosophy, which states, “You are a partner in a journey of knowledge and its application, rather than someone's disciple for personal or organizational glorification.”
Q3. Where are you located?
A3. HIMA is located in Williamsport, MD. Call 240-366-8025 for directions.
Q4. What is the focus of the arts you teach?
A4. Actually we don’t have one focus. Instead, we have two equally important foci – self-defense and personal growth and development.
You will learn self-defense. All of our arts focus on being direct and efficient. The emphasis is on functionality, not beauty. You will learn practical self-defense techniques that will enable you to defend yourself, your family or other loved ones in times of need.
Additionally, you will grow and develop as a person. A comprehensive, holistic martial arts system is a very powerful change agent. It can help you develop self-understanding and a more positive attitude towards life. Your outlook on life will expand as we will teach you about philosophy, biomechanics, psychology, culture, history, tradition and human behavior. Your awareness will increase and your sensitivity will heighten. You will grow and develop as a human being and begin to realize your true potential.
Q5. Would you please describe your typical class?
A5. Each class lasts one hour and fifteen minutes. The basic outline for a class is as follows: Movement Prep (15 minutes); Fundamentals, Drills, Techniques, Lecture (45 minutes); and Fitness and Stretching (15 minutes).
In the early stages of training, the pace of class tends to be slower as this is the most critical time of development. Fundamentals must be meticulously cultivated! This is the foundation that will support your future skills. Shortcuts here are unacceptable!
As fundamentals become ingrained, the pace of class quickens. As this happens, you will get a great cardiovascular (anaerobic) workout. This knowledge worries some prospective students. They believe that they need to be “in shape” prior to beginning their training? While being “in shape” can certainly help, it is not necessary.
Our classes will help you develop all of the physical, mental, and spiritual qualities that you need to succeed in our program and life. The physical nature of our classes and the self-defense aspects of martial arts raises concern for safety in the minds of many.
The physical training portions of our classes are designed by a professional performance enhancement coach. The self-defense segments of our classes are supervised and taught by professional martial arts teachers in a controlled environment. Techniques are broken down to insure understanding and safety during training.
Training requires a partner, and as such your learning is directly affected by your training partner. Everyone is expected to be a great training partner! With this in mind, bad attitudes, huge egos, heavy-handedness, and other detrimental factors are not tolerated!
Q6. How long does it take to get a black belt?
A6. If a black belt is what you seek, you might consider going to your local department store and purchasing one or enrolling in a school that “sells” them.
We do not use a belt ranking system! As such, you will never become a “black belt” here.
As a Magda Institute Association member, our ranking structure is based on ten levels that span six phases. There is a standardized curriculum and pre-established criteria that govern progression. Completing Phase 3 is our equivalent of earning your black belt.
The time it takes you to achieve this status is based on many factors, such as attendance, attitude, coordination, dedication, speed and quality of learning and, therefore, is highly variable from one student to the next. It may take an average student four years or more just to reach Phase 3.
If you are a martial artist at heart, you understand two things. First, you understand that the knowledge you gain and your ability to apply that knowledge are far more important than any belt. Second, you understand that a “black belt” simply indicates your proficiency in the fundamentals of your art. Many mistakenly think it indicates martial arts mastery. From the HIMA perspective, a “black belt” means you are now ready to begin learning.
Q7. What is your class schedule for kids?
A7. We do not teach children! We provide martial arts training to young adults (13 years of age and up) and adults ONLY! Our Beginning Phase 1 classes are held every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Q8. What is your class schedule for adults?
A8. Our Beginning Phase 1 classes are held every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Q9. Do you require sparring?
A9. Yes and no!
As you progress through the phases, you will be required to participate in the “controlled” sparring that occurs in the delivery of the curriculum.
As you progress through the phases, you will be given the opportunity to participate in “free” sparring sessions. This is not mandatory, but it is highly encouraged!
The more “alive” environment experienced in “free” sparring is where you truly develop what works for you!
Q10. Do you have any openings?
A10. Yes! As an institution of higher learning, we are always pleased to enroll new students. However, we do not operate like most martial arts schools. If you are interested in becoming a student, you must submit an application and complete an interview. You will then be notified of your acceptance or non-accpetance.
Q11. Do you offer a trial program?
A11. Yes!
Our trial program provides one week of FREE instruction.
This is great for both of us!
It provides you with the opportunity to “test drive” our program. This gives you an opportunity to see if you “fit” into our family.
It gives us a chance to get to know you. This gives us an opportunity to see if you are truly a good “fit” for us.
Time is the most precious commodity you own! We do not want to waste your time! Nor do we want you wasting our time! A good “fit” from the beginning usually insures a good start and a promising future.
For this reason, ALL prospective students MUST participate in the trial program. You CANNOT start training without completing the trial program!
Q12. What if I sign up and decide it’s not right for me?
A12. That’s okay! We are so confident in our screening process and in our programs that we offer a 30 DAY RISK-FREE MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. This gives you the time you need to determine if you have truly found the right “fit.”
Q13. How do I get started?
A13. Getting started is easy! Learn about our
