One Night in Bangkok, Part 2: The Plan

Okay now, where was I?

Oh yeah …

… I was at the airport.

The plan was ready for implementation.

But first …

The Highly Emotional Reunion

As I de-boarded the plane and made my way up the jetway and out through the arrival gate, I was greeted by my father-in-law, Kumpee Klimprathum (a police officer with the special branch), and a fellow police officer who is a friend.

My journey through immigration and customs was expedited because of my chaperones.

Pa Nuyee (also known as Kumpee) led me outside of the terminal where my wife, son, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law were waiting.

At last, I saw my wife as she was walking towards me.

Emotions were running high and we embraced.

When we released our embrace and began to walk toward our family, I was looking for my son.

Finally, I saw him.

I had been preparing myself for the worst (him not coming to daddy) since it had been more than a month since he had seen daddy.

I approached him with great excitement, but also with reservation. As it turned out, my fears were realized – he didn’t want to have anything to do with daddy.

During the several minutes that it took to walk to the car, he took turns being held by mommy and his aunt. He also spent some time walking. When being held, he would peek around to look at daddy.

Finally, we arrived at the car.

I got in the back seat with my wife, son and sister-in-law.

Once situated, my wife tried to pass Bodhi to me but he wouldn’t come to me.

I had prepared myself for this so I was able to cope with the disappointment of not being able to hold my son.

The ride to my in-laws home was approximately an hour.

Under normal circumstances, an hour long ride would have been intolerable.

This particular hour long ride, however, was a breeze.

I was so happy to be reunited with my wife and son that the ride didn’t bother me at all.

Hunger Calls

En route to my in-laws, my wife informed me that we would be stopping to eat. It didn’t matter that it was after midnight.

When a pregnant woman wants food, she wants food!

We stopped at The Shock Khao Tom Phee, a restaurant in Ramintra.

As it turned out, I was glad that we did stop.

For starters, my son fell asleep in the car. While he awoke after getting out of the car, he did go back to sleep while we were at the restaurant. So, daddy finally got to hold his son.

Additionally, since I was not a fan of the airplane food I was actually very hungry too.

My wife ordered me some fried rice because I was unable to read the menu (it was in Thai) and because I am a rather finicky eater.

The fried rice, which included some shrimp, was quite good.

Home at Last

Finally, we arrived at my in-laws in Rangsit.

Rangsit is in Pathumthani Province, approximately 25 miles north of Bangkok. Despite its distance, Rangsit is still considered a suburb of the sprawling metropolis that is Bangkok.

I took my suitcase out of the car, into the house and up to my sister-in-law’s room where my suitcase would remain during my stay.

I then headed into my father- and mother-in-law’s room where I would be sleeping with my wife and son.

The 2-Week Plan

My wife had been planning the details of this trip for months.

The plan began with a two-day return trip to Pattaya.

Next up was a two-day return trip to Hua Hin.

We would then return home for a brief one- or two-day rest.

After some rest, we would head to Bang Saen for a night.

We would then visit Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan before returning home to Rangsit.

After another brief respite, we would journey west to Kanchanaburi for a day or two.

Somewhere during my two-week stay, we would also find the time to visit Ayutthaya again, return to Loong Nuay’s, and catch up with our friend Goh.

As you can see, not much down time for anything else that I might want to do, such as participate in some Muay Thai training.

Week One

We got off to a very rough start that dramatically altered the plan.

The morning after my arrival we took Bodhi, who had a very hoarse-sounding cough when I arrived, to the emergency room at Rangsit General Hospital.

He was evaluated by a pediatrician and immediately admitted for the croup.

So, the ENTIRE family (my father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, wife, and me) spent nearly a day-and-a-half in the hospital.

While the hospital stay necessitated the cancellation of our return trip to Pattaya, we decided to keep our Hua Hin reservations since Bodhi had been released and seemed to be doing better.

Hua Hin Dusit Thani
We spent two enjoyable days at the Hua Hin Dusit Thani.

We then returned home for a break.

After some rest, we headed to Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan in Chachoengsao.

Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan
After Piyanan made an offering and prayed, we went inside the hall of the main building.

After leaving Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan, we headed to Bang Saen.

Bang Saen
We drove along the road in front of the beach and took in the scenery.

We came across a viewing area that looked out into the Gulf of Thailand so we stopped for a short time to enjoy the breeze and the sights.

We then drove back along the road in front of the beach for a few minutes before stopping to park.

It was time to let Bodhi play on the beach for a few minutes because he loves being outdoors.

He started off by playing in the sand and ended up playing in a small “pool” that had formed when the tide subsided but some of the Gulf remained trap in a recessed area of sand.

After Bodhi’s play time was over, we walked back to the vehicle and the ride home began.

Before leaving Bang Saen, we stopped at a local market for my wife to get some goodies.

After getting some crabs and oysters and other things, we piled back into the truck to go home.
