Do You Seek A Maryland Silat School List?This Maryland Silat page is designed to increase public exposure to the Indonesian martial art of Pentjak Silat.Having spent a great deal of time conducting Internet searches for schools in Maryland that provide martial arts training in the Indonesian method of Silat, it’s quite obvious that when compared to other countries’ martial arts like Korea, Japan, or China, the Indonesian Martial Art of Pentjak Silat lacks the same level of mainstream exposure. This is extremely unfortunate because this art is a highly evolved martial form that has much to offer students. Like Filipino Kali, Silat is a highly evolved martial form that provides a comprehensive warrior education which includes both empty-hand and weapons applications. Students learn a variety of techniques that can be applied to the various aspects of combat, such as striking, trapping, and sweeping to name but three. Students also learn to apply empty-hand applications to weapons. Furthermore, students learn a fighting philosophy that is supported by laws. Once fully understood, this doctrinal foundation allows students to put philosophy into action. Adherence to the doctrine improves the application of techniques, allows for flexibility in application, and provides a framework for analyzing the system’s techniques, as well as techniques of other systems. As a student and teacher of Silat, I am highly confident that you will love this art too if you just have a quality opportunity to experience it. While I would obviously like your quality opportunity to experience the Indonesian Martial Art of Silat to be with me, I understand that your location may make that unlikely. With that in mind, I have provided you with a list of schools in Maryland that teach Pentjak Silat. This list is by no means a comprehensive list of schools and / or teachers. It is simply based on my personal Internet research. It is my sincere hope that you use this list to begin your (what I hope will be lifelong) journey into the wonderful world of Pentjak Silat. NOTES: The list is alphabetized and includes my institute in Williamsport, which is listed under Hagerstown because it is more widely recognized throughout the state.
