Higher Learning

HIMA is the four-state region’s only martial arts Institute of higher learning.

What makes it an Institute of higher learning?

The many things that it shares with academic institutions of higher learning!

For starters, colleges and universities provide education in an effort to aid the growth and development of students and to prepare students for the world that awaits.

HIMA is no different! While the subject matter is different, the education provided by HIMA serves to aid the growth and development of its students and to prepare its students for the rigors of the real world.

HIMA’s education transforms lives!

HIMA is somewhat reminiscent of a liberal arts college.

Liberal arts colleges are known for requiring students to take a wide variety of classes with the goal being to produce a well-rounded individual.

The programs of study available at HIMA are designed to produce an equally well-rounded individual using martial arts study as the instrument of change.

Colleges and universities have curriculums that keep most students learning for at least four years and in some cases up to eight years.

HIMA’s programs are designed to keep an average student learning and progressing for eight to ten years.



The Ultimate Personal Development Vehicle

Few vehicles compare to martial arts in terms of personal development.

In fact, HIMA contends that the martial arts are the ultimate personal development vehicle.

HIMA makes this proclamation because the martial arts have the potential to develop the whole individual – the mind, body, and spirit.

HIMA’s programs of study will challenge the mind in many ways. A sampling of the mental challenges include: learning and then remembering how to execute specific moves, learning and then remembering terminology, learning and remembering principles.

Your body will be challenged continuously. Samplings of the physical challenges include movement prep exercises, skills training, physical conditioning, post-skills training and stretching.

Your spirit will be tested regularly as well. As you progress through our programs of study, the rigors of training increase. These rigors will test your mettle. Sometimes, the test is physical in nature. Other times, it’s psychological in nature.

It is this integrated and simultaneous development of the mind, body, and spirit that truly makes martial arts the ultimate personal development vehicle.
